Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty vs descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty and penetrating keratoplasty
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 06, 2019
Woo JH, et al. - In this retrospective comparative cohort study, researchers contrasted the long-term graft survival results and complications of patients who had Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), and penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) and bullous keratopathy (BK). The sample consisted of patients with FECD and BK who had DMEK (121 eyes), DSAEK (423 eyes), or PK (405 eyes) from the prospective cohort from the Singapore Corneal Transplant Registry. Compared with DSAEK and PK, the DMEK group had the best overall cumulative graft survival of 97.4%. The DMEK group had the best graft survival of 98.7% vs DSAEK and PK in eyes with FECD. For the same indications, eyes undergoing DMEK also had a significantly lower graft rejection rate and elevated intraocular pressure relative to DSAEK and PK.
