Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty: Safety and outcomes
Ophthalmology Sep 27, 2017
Deng SX, et al. - The objective here was to re-analyze the safety and outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) for the surgical treatment of corneal endothelial dysfunction. DMEK was concluded to be a safe and effective treatment for endothelial failure. DMEK appeared to be superior to DescemetÂs stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) in terms of visual recovery time, visual outcomes, and rejection rates. It induced less refractive error with similar surgical risks and endothelial cell (EC) loss compared with DSEK. A similar rate of air injection and repeat keratoplasty were revealed in DMEK and DSEK, after the learning curve for DMEK.
