Depressive symptoms and type 2 diabetes mellitus among midlife women
Menopause Jun 12, 2021
Im E, Yi JS, Chee W, et al. - Via performing this secondary analysis using a decision tree analysis, researchers herein investigated if and how type II diabetes mellitus (DM) is correlated with depressive symptoms among midlife women from four major racial/ethnic groups in the US. In addition, they reported the complex characteristics of the women that were closely associated with depressive symptoms. Two larger Internet survey studies were used for retrieving data for this analysis. They included data from a total of 164 women (62 with type II diabetes and 102 without diabetes). Those with DM had significantly higher total numbers and total severity scores of depressive symptoms compared with those without DM. Significant differences were identified in the total numbers and total severity scores of depressive symptoms by menopausal status and race/ethnicity. DM was identified to be a significant factor that impacted the total severity scores of depressive symptoms among midlife women in peri- or postmenopausal stages who were born outside the US and among midlife women in their premenopausal stage.
