Depressive symptoms and cerebral microvascular disease in adults with Type 1 diabetes mellitus
Diabetic Medicine Mar 20, 2019
Nunley KA, et al. - Researchers estimated the prevalence of depressive symptoms and cerebral microvascular disease in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. They observed depressive symptoms more prevalent among those with vs those without Type 1 diabetes (28% vs 3%). They reported 40% of the association of type 1 diabetes with depressive symptoms was due to white matter hyperintensities. They also found a direct impact of 68% on depressive symptoms by type 1 diabetes. They recorded a correlation of depressive symptoms to white matter hyperintensity volume, a 16-year average HbA1c ≥58 mmol/mol (7.5%), and lower physical activity levels among those with type 1 diabetes. They suggested a cerebrovascular origin for depressive symptoms ( maybe triggered by hyperglycemia) in subjects with type 1 diabetes.
