Depression before and after bariatric surgery in low-income patients: The utility of the Beck Depression Inventory

Alabi F, et al. - Researchers explored depression prevalence and evolution after gastric bypass, and its impact on weight loss, especially among low-income patients. They noted some degree of depression in nearly half of bariatric surgery candidates, that improves dramatically soon after bariatric surgery. During the first year, the change remains stable. As per findings, improvement was irrespective of gender, and depression did not influence weight loss. Low-income bariatric patients displayed lower depression than reports from developed countries but experienced similar improvement.
