Depression and sleep disorders are associated with early mortality in women with breast cancer in the United Kingdom
Journal of Psychiatric Research Nov 27, 2020
Bach L, Kalder M, Kostev K., et al. - Among patients suffering from breast cancer, researchers conducted this retrospective cohort analysis to assess the link between common mental disorders and death. Participants were women aged 18-80 who received an initial diagnosis of breast cancer in one of 200 general practices in the UK between January 2008 and December 2012. Experts used Cox regression models to assess mortality within 5 years of the index date as a function of depression, and sleep disorders. This analysis involved 6,656 women, and 461 (6.9%) of them were deceased within 5 years of the index date. Depression, and sleep disorders were found to be significantly related to mortality within 5 years. Based on these findings, the essential steps to counteract the considerable death rate of BC patients include treating BC patients with chronic diseases holistically and taking mental comorbidities seriously as factors impacting the survival of patients.
