Depression and cognitive impairment in institutionalized older adults

Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders Aug 29, 2020

Camacho-Conde JA, Galán-López JM., et al. - In institutionalized older adults, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between depressive disorder and cognitive deterioration in this descriptive, correlational study. Data were collected from two nursing homes in the province of Jaen (Spain) from a random sample of 140 older adults (70 nondependent and 70 dependent). They used a comprehensive geriatric assessment, the Cambridge Cognitive Test (CAMCOG), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) to measure variables. Findings suggested an association of cognitive deterioration with depressive symptoms. In institutions that care for older adults who are more dependent, depression is prevalent. In the dependent vs the nondependent older adults, depression was more common. There was no correlation between institutionalization time and the score obtained in both groups on the cognitive and affective scales (GDS and CAMCOG).
