Depression and anxiety in adults with hidradenitis suppurativa: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Aug 21, 2019
Machado MO, Stergiopoulos V, Maes M, et al. - Via a systematic review and meta-analysis of ten studies comprising 40,307 patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), researchers evaluated the prevalence and odds for depression and anxiety in patients with HS. Of depression, the overall prevalence was 16.9%. Heterogeneity was great. In the subgroup of studies that acknowledged a clinical criteria–based diagnosis of depression, the prevalence of depression was 11.9% vs 26.8% in studies that used a screening instrument. The methodological quality of involved studies moderated those outcomes. In individuals with HS vs individuals without HS, the OR for depression was 1.84. The prevalence of anxiety was 4.9% and there were inadequate data to ascertain an OR for anxiety in persons with HS since two studies involved a comparison group. In conclusion, in patients with HS, depression and anxiety are prevalent comorbid conditions.
