Denver ED Trauma Organ Failure Score predicts healthcare resource utilization in adult trauma patients
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jun 12, 2019
Vogel JA, et al. - Via this retrospective study of adult trauma patients at Denver Health Medical Center, researchers examined how Denver Emergency Department (ED) Trauma Organ Failure (TOF) Score is associated with healthcare resource utilization. They analyzed 3000 patients (median age: 42 years, 71% male; median injury severity score 9 and 83% blunt mechanism). Outcomes support the predictive value of the Denver ED TOF Score for healthcare resource utilization and its utility as a bedside tool for identifying patients early after injury that are likely to require significant healthcare resources and specialized trauma care. For high- and moderate-risk as compared to low risk for number of procedures performed, the adjusted relative risk was 2.31 and 1.80 respectively; intensive care unit length of stay (LOS) was 2.87 and 1.71 respectively; hospital LOS was 3.33 and 1.97 respectively. For high-, moderate-, and low-risk for costs, the adjusted geometric mean was $48,881, $27,890, and $12,983, respectively.
