Dental screening in elective total joint arthroplasty: Risk factors for failure
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 24, 2020
Kohler JG, Holte A, Glass N, et al. - Researchers desired to know how many elective total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients failed preoperative dental screening and what patient risk factors were associated with failure. They studied 511 operations in 511 patients. Universal dental screening prior to primary TJA resulted in an invasive dental intervention required by 18.5% of patients. For patients and providers, universal dental screening results in extra cost and time. Although male sex and active smoking have been associated with increased chances of needing an invasive dental procedure, further work is required to establish targeted screening to enhance perioperative workflow and minimize unnecessary dental tests for patients.
