Dental injury in anaesthesia: A tertiary hospital’s experience
BMC Anesthesiology Aug 20, 2018
Tan Y, et al. - Researchers determined the incidence, risk factors, and local practices in the management of perioperative dental injuries in Singapore by using data from the departmental database from 2011 to 2014. They identified risk factors for dental trauma by using logistic regression (between 51 dental trauma patients and 55,107 patients without dental trauma). For general anaesthesia cases, the estimated rate of dental injury was 0.092%. An increased risk of dental injury was observed in relation to videolaryngoscopy with the McGrath MAC, the possible reason for this could be the use of videolarygoscopes when increased risk of dental trauma was anticipated, or due to incorrect technique of laryngoscopy. Supraglottic airway devices insertion was performed in 7 (13.7%) patients and only 23 (45.1%) cases were referred to dental services. Development of departmental guidelines could improve the management of dental injuries.
