Density of breast: An independent risk factor for developing breast cancer, a prospective study at two premium breast centers
Cancer Medicine Mar 11, 2020
Lo CH, Chai XY, Ting SSW, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective cohort analysis to investigate whether the density of breast represents an independent risk factor that will add to the development of breast cancer. This inquiry was performed in two hospitals and included adult female patients who visited the Breast Clinic with symptoms suspicious of breast cancer. Experts correlated breast density (evaluated from mammogram) with tissue biopsy outcomes and final diagnosis of benign or malignant breast disease. A 29% increased risk of breast cancer was observed in women with dense breasts vs those with almost entirely fatty breasts. The chance of developing breast cancer was 3.1 times greater in postmenopausal women with dense breasts vs postmenopausal women with fatty breasts. Moreover, the likelihood of breast cancer occurrence increased with age. Although the findings were not statistically significant, a crucial link between breast density and risk of breast cancer could not be ruled out.
