Demographic, clinical and management characteristics of newly diagnosed COPD patients in Turkey: A real-life study

International Journal of COPD Feb 12, 2020

Suerdem M, Gunen H, Akyildiz L, et al. - Researchers investigated the detailed characteristics and therapies of COPD patients enrolled in a multicenter study that was initiated to define the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of newly diagnosed treatment-naïve asthma and COPD patients in Turkey. This nation-wide, multicentric, non-interventional, prospective, real-life observational cohort study was performed in 122 centers and included 776 newly diagnosed COPD patients who were not receiving any treatment before the recruitment. The mean age was 59.4± 9.1 years and females comprised 11.9% of the patients. In the GOLD 2011 C and D category, there were 35.1% of the patients. Frequent exacerbations were reported in 12.6%, and at least one comorbid condition was reported in 52.8%. Overtreatment was detected in 71.8%. For three follow-up visits, their attendance rates were 55.9%, 32.9%, and 18.7%, respectively. The treatment adherence rate was 81.9%. Findings thereby suggest that despite being diagnosed for the first time, these patients exhibited a high rate of the GOLD C and D categories and frequent exacerbator phenotype. They suggest performing a careful evaluation of newly diagnosed COPD patients and emphasize making best effort to treat these patients in accordance with the recommendations of the major COPD guidelines.
