Demographic characteristics, risk factors, and presenting features of children with symptomatic nutritional rickets: A French series
Hormone Research in Paediatrics Nov 03, 2020
Flot C, Porquet-Bordes V, Bacchetta J, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to describe the demographic characteristics, risk factors, and presenting features of children with symptomatic nutritional rickets in France. The sample consisted of 38 children diagnosed with nutritional rickets from 1998 to 2019. The data presented in this work showed a higher frequency of rickets in males, in young children, and in children with a non-Caucasian ethnic background. Bowed legs, hypocalcemic seizures, and growth retardation were the most common presentations. Nearly half (62%) of the children were hypocalcemic. Nutritional rickets in the pediatric population remains endemic and may have life-threatening sequelae in their most severe forms. To raise awareness and screen high-risk populations, health practitioners need to be conscious of these realities.
