Dementia and risk of 30-day readmission in older adults after discharge from acute care hospitals
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jun 09, 2018
Sakata N, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort study utilizing nationwide discharge data of acute care hospitals in Japan to evaluate the link between dementia and risk of hospital readmission the possible impact of primary diagnosis on this link. They noted that primary diagnosis did impact the link between dementia and risk of hospital readmission, from 3.0% in patients with prostate cancer to 69.4% in those with aspiration pneumonia. In order to reduce readmission in individuals with dementia, healthcare providers need to focus on comorbid conditions and specific primary diagnoses that increase risk of readmission in these subjects.
