Dementia and risk of 30-day readmission in older adults after discharge from acute care hospitals
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Mar 11, 2018
Sakata N, et al. - The association between dementia and the risk of hospital readmission was evaluated. Whether or not the impact of dementia on hospital readmission differs according to primary diagnosis was determined. A higher risk of hospital readmission was shown among demented versus non-demented patients, although diagnostic category substantially modified the link between dementia and hospital readmission. Notably, the dementia-related risk of hospital readmission varied according to primary diagnosis. By focusing on co-morbid conditions and specific primary diagnoses that increase the risk of readmission, healthcare providers can minimize dementia-related readmission rates.
