Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and mortality after hemodialysis initiation
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Aug 15, 2018
McAdams-DeMarco MA, et al. - Researchers used national registry data (US Renal Data System) linked to Medicare in order to estimate incidence, risk factors, and sequelae of diagnosis with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease among 356,668 older (age ≥66 years old) ESKD patients on hemodialysis (January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2013). For this purpose, they used competing risks models as well as Cox proportional hazards models. They found a substantial risk of diagnosis with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease was evident in older patients on hemodialysis. They observed a twofold higher mortality related to carrying these diagnoses. Identified strongest independent risk factors for diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease were age ≥86 years old, black race, women, and institutionalization.
