Deliberate self-harm in older adults: A national analysis of U.S. Emergency Department visits and follow-up care
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Apr 04, 2019
Schmutte T, et al. - In this retrospective cohort analysis, researchers analyzed 2015 Medicare claims to investigate mental health care received by older adults (>65 years of age) following Emergency Department visits for deliberate self-harm (N=16,495). Adjusted risk ratios (ARR) for discharge disposition, Emergency Department (ED) coding of mental disorder, and 30-day follow-up mental health outpatient care were estimated for these adults. Findings revealed hospitalization for most older adult Medicare beneficiaries who present to EDs with self-harm. No mental disorder diagnosis was made for many in the ED or no reception of timely follow-up mental health care was noted among those who are discharged to the community.
