Delayed endoscopy is associated with increased mortality in upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine May 31, 2018
Jeong N, et al. - Patients with upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage (UGIH) were investigated for the association between delayed (>24 h) endoscopy and hospital mortality. Adult patients (1,101 patients) with UGIH who underwent endoscopy in a single emergency room for 2 years were retrospectively analyzed. Observations revealed that 898/1,101 received endoscopy within 24 h (early group) and 203/1,101 received endoscopy after 24 h (delayed group). Increased hospital mortality was noted in association with endoscopy performed after 24 h in UGIH. Patients in the delayed group also displayed higher ED stay and hospital stay.
