Delayed diagnosis of colorectal sexually transmitted diseases due to their resemblance to inflammatory bowel diseases
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Aug 23, 2018
Levy I, et al. - In this first report of biovar L2b in Israel, researchers delineated missed diagnosis of colorectal sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their association with LGV (lymphogranuloma venereum) in Israel. They characterized clinical, endoscopic and pathologic findings of 16 patients diagnosed with colorectal STD after erroneously being diagnosed with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). As colorectal STDs may resemble IBD, their diagnosis may be delayed. They recommend performing at least syphilis and anal PCR for STD testing among MSM with IBD symptoms and who engage in non-protected anal sex. They recommend administering doxycycline 100 mg BID for 21 days if chlamydia trachomatis is diagnosed but LGV subtyping cannot be done.
