Delay of antibiotic administration greater than 2 hours predicts surgical site infection in open fractures
Injury May 14, 2020
Roddy E, et al. - Given the association of antibiotic administration, severity of injury, and debridement with surgical site infection (SSI) after internal fixation of open fractures, researchers aimed at validating a time-dependent treatment effect of antibiotic administration. From an orthopedic registry from 2013-2017, they assessed 230 open fracture patients with minimum 30-day follow-up. SSI developed in 10% patients. A trend of earlier administration of antibiotics was observed for patients who did not develop an SSI vs those who did develop an SSI. As per analysis, the increased risk of SSI was evident in correlation with antibiotic administration greater than 120 minutes after ED presentation of an open fracture.
