Degenerative mitral regurgitation predicts worse outcomes in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement

Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Apr 07, 2018

Kindya B, et al. - Researchers sought how the etiology and severity of mitral regurgitation (MR) impact patient outcomes after undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Compared to patients with none-mild MR, decreased survival free of death or CHF hospitalization was observed only among patients with moderate-severe degenerative MR. The chances to be hospitalized for heart failure at 2 years were higher than those with moderate-severe degenerative MR relative to those with moderate-severe functional MR. At follow up, improvement in MR severity was less likely to be seen in those with moderate-severe degenerative MR. Overall, patients with moderate-severe degenerative MR undergoing TAVR require special consideration, and may benefit from consideration of double valve intervention.
