Defining the risk factors for acute, subacute and chronic cough: A cross-sectional study in a Finnish adult employee population
BMJ Open Jul 20, 2018
Lätti AM, et al. - To detect the risk factors specifically associated with a chronic cough, researchers conducted this this cross-sectional study to identify long-standing risk factors for acute, subacute and chronic cough. It was noted that allergy was correlated with an acute and subacute cough whereas current asthma and chronic rhinitis were linked to a subacute and chronic cough. According to the findings obtained, esophageal reflux disease and advanced age were the specific risk factors for chronic cough. Results of this study suggested that acute and subacute cough should not be considered as simply symptoms of acute respiratory infections, but possible displays of long-standing risk factors. A family history of a chronic cough was a new risk factor for all cough types.
