Defining high-quality NSCLC care at U.S. cancer centers
Journal of Clinical Oncology Oct 14, 2020
Socinski MA, Boehmer L., et al. - Despite the existence of clinical guidelines for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) offering suggestions on individual elements of care and recommending multidisciplinary collaboration, there is still a lack of guidance spanning the entire patient journey, so researchers intended to assemble quality-focused recommendations for the multidisciplinary team and chose clinical criteria for ideal NSCLC care, as well as introducing a novel set of metrics covering the whole care continuum. Through the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ (ACCC) national quality care initiative for patients suffering from advanced (stage III/IV) NSCLC, these metrics would be employed as a novel benchmark for ideal NSCLC care. Within main care sectors of the patient journey (ie, care coordination and patient education, diagnosis and biomarker testing, staging and treatment planning, and survivorship), quality recommendations were organized by an expert steering committee of multidisciplinary specialists and representatives from patient advocacy. Across the four key NSCLC care areas, 32 recommendations were incorporated. Overall, not only ideal NSCLC care is defined by the complete set of recommendations but also these can be a useful guide for multidisciplinary practice and quality improvement initiatives.
