Deficits in geriatric assessment associate with disease activity and -burden in older patients with inflammatory bowel disease
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jun 23, 2021
Asscher VER, Waars SN, van der Meulen-de Jong AE, et al. - Researchers sought to perform the geriatric assessment in older inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients to assess which IBD characteristics associate with deficits in geriatric assessment and the impact of deficits on disease burden (health-related quality of life (HRQoL)). The sample consisted of 405 consecutive outpatient IBD patients aged ≥ 65 years. Somatic domain (comorbidity, polypharmacy, malnutrition), impairments in (instrumental) activities of daily living, physical capacity (handgrip strength, gait speed), mental (depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment), and social domain (life-partner) have been evaluated. According to this prospective multicenter cohort study, deficits in geriatric assessment are common in elderly IBD patients. Deficits are more common in patients with active disease, and deficits are associated with lower HRQoL, indicating a higher disease burden. To improve treatment methods, prospective data verifying the influence of frailty and geriatric evaluation on outcomes is needed.
