Dedicated neck 18F-FDG PET/CT: An additional tool for risk assessment in thyroid nodules at ultrasound intermediate risk
Clinical Endocrinology Feb 17, 2019
Trimboli P, et al. - Researchers assessed the reliability of 18F-FDG PET/CT in better stratifying the risk of malignancy in thyroid nodules already assessed at intermediate risk via ultrasound. Two institutions participated in this study, in which patients with a thyroid nodule with a US assessment of EU-TIRADS 4 or 5 were offered a dedicated 18F-FDG PET/CT. In this retrospective study, 93 patients with 48 EU-TIRADS 4 and 45 EU-TIRADS 5 nodules were included. Findings suggested that 18F-FDG PET/CT may be used to stratify the risk of cancer of thyroid nodules with an intermediate ultrasound evaluation. In particular, thyroid lesions classified as EU-TIRADS 4 and with no uptake of 18F-FDG could be excluded from further examination, comparable to other patients with suspicious anamnestic and clinical factors.
