Decreasing body mass index is associated with cerebrospinal fluid markers of Alzheimers pathology in MCI and mild dementia

Mathys J, et al. - The possible association between BMI and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology was evaluated in subjects with normal cognition and cognitive impairment. Furthermore, the physicians aimed to examine whether body mass index (BMI) could contribute in improving the accuracy of a clinical model to predict AD pathology in memory clinic patients with cognitive impairment. Among elderly subjects with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia, lower BMI was correlated with cerebral AD pathology rather than with cognitive impairment. Decreasing BMI, along with other clinical factors, could help the clinician to identify patients with cognitive impairment because of the AD.
