Decreased tongue volume post radiation
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Mar 11, 2020
Garber D, Rotsides J, Abu-Ghanem S, et al. - In this retrospective review involving 19 patients, researchers assessed volume changes within the tongue post chemoradiation therapy (CRT). Patients who received CRT as the primary treatment for tonsillar or hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma were included in this analysis. The authors discovered that inter-rater reliability was high with an ICC of 0.849. Dysfunction of the tongue and decreased strength of the tongue are important contributors to the dysphagia which patients experience after receiving CRT. Both tongue volume and BMI decreased post-CRT in this study. Thus, BMI could potentially be used as a predictor of tongue volume post-CRT.
