Decreased retinal thickness in preschool offspring of maternal gestational hypertension: The Nanjing Eye Study

Acta Ophthalmologica Feb 15, 2020

Zhao X, Li R, Huang D, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the impact of maternal gestational hypertension (GH) on retinal thickness of 5–6-year-old children, involving macular thickness, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness and peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness. Comprehensive ocular examinations were performed in children aged 61–72 months, including noncycloplegic refraction, ocular biometric parameters, and retinal parameters, as part of Nanjing Eye Study. Among 1,062 children with complete from eye examination and questionnaire, 30 children were born with maternal GH. Findings suggested that children exposed to maternal GH appeared to have thinner macular, RNFL and GC-IPL thickness. Such findings suggest that maternal GH can affect the development of retina in children, thereby obstructing the development of the nervous system of the offspring.
