Decreased readmissions and improved quality of care with the use of an inexpensive checklist in heart failure
Congestive Heart Failure May 15, 2019
Basoor A, et al. - Whether a better quality of care and decreased readmissions could be ensured among heart failure (HF) patients by using a quality-improvement HF checklist, developed by the researchers, was investigated in this study. The checklist consisted of documentation on medications and dose uptitration, relevant counseling, and follow-up instructions at discharge. The investigators compared the checklist group (48 patients among whom the checklist was used) with a control group (48 patients). In the checklist group vs the control group, the proportions of patients receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) was higher. Also, the checklist group vs controls more commonly had dose uptitration for β-blockers and/or ACE inhibitors/ARBs. Overall, a better quality of care and reduced readmission rates were reported for patients admitted with HF when an HF checklist was used.
