Decreased interhemispheric homotopic connectivity in Parkinson's disease patients with freezing of gait: A resting state fMRI study

Parkinsonism & Related Disorders Apr 02, 2018

Li J, et al. - In order to determine the neural bases of freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson's disease (PD), researchers sought to examine the homotopic connectivity estimated via the voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) approach to investigate FOG-related interehemispheric alterations in PD-FOG + patients, PD patients without freezing of gait (PD-FOG-), and matched healthy controls through the resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scan. Results depicted decreased VMHC values in the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) among PD-FOG + patients compared to both PD-FOG-patients and healthy controls. VMHC in the IPL was reported to have a discriminatory function in distinguishing PD-FOG + patients. Hence, it could serve as a unique feature for PD-FOG+, possibly displaying the ability to separate PD-FOG + patients from PD-FOG- and healthy controls.
