Decreased GlycA following lifestyle intervention among obese, prediabetic adolescent Latinos
Journal of Clinical Lipidology Sep 30, 2018
Olson ML, et al. - Considering the part increased systemic inflammation plays in increasing risk for premature morbidity and mortality among youth with prediabetes, researchers sought to determine how lifestyle intervention could alter GlycA among obese, prediabetic Latino youth (n=27; 15.5±1.1 years, 13 male/14 female). These subjects underwent a 12-week lifestyle intervention comprising of weekly nutrition education and three days/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity. GlycA was significantly lowered after the lifestyle intervention. Improvements were also seen in multiple cardiovascular risk factors, including body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, and 2-hour glucose. Findings supported the premise that lifestyle intervention might improve GlycA levels in obese, prediabetic adolescent Latinos, and future risk of cardiometabolic disease could also be attenuated via healthy lifestyle modifications.
