De-escalation of post-treatment surveillance in oropharyngeal cancer
Head & Neck Apr 19, 2019
Ilmarinen T, et al. - All follow-up visits conducted in 2014 at Helsinki University Hospital Department of Otorhinolaryngology were reviewed to determine the benefits of routine clinical surveillance in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). They identified 366 visits; of these, 26 (7%) were from patients presenting with a new symptom, and disease recurrence was detected in four. Observations revealed a significant association between the presence of a new symptom and disease recurrence. Patients presenting without new symptoms made 340 (93%) visits; not a single recurrence was found during these visits. These Findings suggest the possibility of a reduction in the number of routine post-treatment visits. They recommend focusing follow-up on symptom-directed examinations.
