DDT and breast cancer: Prospective study of induction time and susceptibility windows

Journal of the National Cancer Institute Feb 20, 2019

Cohn BA, et al. – In a prior Child Health and Development Studies report, p, p’-DDT was linked to a fivefold increased risk of premenopausal (prior to age 50) breast cancer in women first exposed before puberty. Therefore, researchers conducted this study to extend this observation to breast cancer diagnosed during early postmenopause (ages 50–54 years) to determine the impact of age at diagnosis on the interaction of DDT with age at exposure. Findings supported the existence of an association between p, p’-DDT and breast cancer through age 54. The timing of first exposure and diagnosis age influenced the risk, suggesting susceptibility windows and an induction period beginning in early life. DDT seems to disturb the endocrine function with responsive breast targets from in utero to menopause.
