Daytime sleepiness may be an independent symptom unrelated to sleep quality in Parkinson’s disease
Journal of Neurology Jan 07, 2019
Liguori C, et al. - Researchers performed a secondary analysis of a prior study that determined how nocturnal sleep improved in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients treated by rotigotine vs placebo to assess the daytime sleepiness of PD patients after nocturnal administration of rotigotine (PD-Rot) vs placebo (PD-Pla)], measured by both subjective (Epworth Sleepiness Scale—ESS) and objective (Multiple Sleep Latency Test—MSLT) tools. On analyzing 21 PD-Rot vs 21 PD-Pla patients, in both groups no significant changes were found in ESS and MSLT data between baseline and follow-up visits. Findings thus suggest no alteration in daytime sleepiness resulted from the improvement of nocturnal sleep in PD patients. This suggests the occurrence of diurnal sleepiness is independent of nocturnal sleep disturbances in these patients.
