Days alive and out of hospital: Validation of a patient-centered outcome for perioperative medicine
Anesthesiology Jun 22, 2019
Jerath A, et al. - Whether days alive and out of hospital can be feasible and valid as a patient-centered outcome for perioperative medicine, was investigated in this study with adults (n=540,072) undergoing 1 of 12 major elective noncardiac surgical procedures. Days alive and out of hospital at 30 days was the primary outcome, and days alive and out of hospital at 90 days and 180 days were the secondary outcomes. For hysterectomy and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (27 days), the median days alive and out of hospital at 30 days was highest, whereas, it was lowest for upper gastrointestinal surgery (22 days). Findings revealed the feasibility of days alive and out of hospital as a patient-centered outcome. Also, its relation to clinically sensible patient features, surgical complexity, in-hospital complications, and longer-term outcomes, was evident. For future clinical trials and observational studies targeting adult surgical patients, days alive and out of hospital affords a new patient-centered outcome.
