DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) dietary pattern and maternal blood pressure in pregnancy
Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics Mar 25, 2020
Courtney AU, O’Brien EC, Crowley RK, et al. - Researchers investigated if and how the DASH dietary pattern influence maternal blood pressure (BP) in pregnancy. They conducted an observational study of 511 women who participated in the ROLO study (Randomized cOntrol trial of LOw glycaemic index diet for the prevention of recurrence of macrosomia), 2007–2011, Dublin, Ireland. Measurement of auscultatory blood pressure, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure measurements was done. Calculation of mean arterial pressure was done. Using 3‐day food diaries, record of dietary intakes was made in each trimester. Participants were scored and ranked from low to high intakes of foods recommended in the DASH diet using DASH scoring criteria. Outcome analysis suggest association of the DASH dietary pattern with lower maternal BP in pregnancy among healthy women without hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Although these finding are of observational nature, the results establish the potential for healthcare professionals to intervene to raise cardiovascular health in pregnancy.
