Daily supplementation with egg, cow milk, and multiple micronutrients increases linear growth of young children with short stature
The Journal of Nutrition Nov 07, 2019
Mahfuz M, Alam MA, Das S, et al. - Researchers investigated if an improved linear growth may be seen in correlation with daily supplementation with egg, cow milk, and multiple micronutrients in 12–18-mo-old undernourished Bangladeshi children. Daily supplementation with an egg and 150 mL of milk for 90 feeding days and 1 sachet of multiple micronutrient powder daily for 60 feeding days was provided to 12–18-mo-old children with length-for-age z score (LAZ) < 1 in a community-based intervention study named the Bangladesh Environmental Enteric Dysfunction study. They used children of the same age and same baseline LAZ registered in the recently ended Etiology, Risk Factors, and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health Dhaka birth cohort study carried in the same community, with no nutrition intervention implemented, to compare the alteration in LAZ during this period. The intervention was completed by 472 children with LAZ < 1 and the comparison group included data for 174 children. Findings revealed that improvement in linear growth of stunted children may be brought about by daily directly observed milk, egg, and multiple micronutrient supplementation in these individuals.
