Daily stair climbing is associated with decreased risk for the metabolic syndrome
BMC Public Health May 28, 2021
Whittaker AC, Eves FF, Carroll D, et al. - Whether daily stair climbing is associated with metabolic syndrome was investigated by analyzing data from the Dutch Famine Birth Cohort Study (2002–2004), a cohort of late middle-aged men and women. Total 782 (423 women) participants (mean (SD) age 58.3 (0.95) years were analyzed. An elevated incidence of the metabolic syndrome as well as a greater number of its components was observed in relation to not climbing stairs daily; these links existed even following adjustment for a variety of potential confounders. It was inferred that daily stair climbing may prevent metabolic syndrome development. Thus, these data strengthen public health recommendations for increased stair climbing with evidence from physiological outcomes.
