Daily duration of long-term oxygen therapy and risk of hospitalization in oxygen-dependent COPD patients
International Journal of COPD Sep 03, 2018
Sundh J, et al. - Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) has been shown to increase survival and might lessen hospital admissions in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and severe hypoxemia, so researchers assessed how the daily duration of LTOT (24 vs 15 hours/day) is linked to hospital admissions in COPD patients with LTOT selected from the Swedish national register for respiratory failure (Swedevox). This population-based, cohort study comprised patients who started LTOT due to COPD between October 1, 2005 and June 30, 2009. Findings revealed no decreased hospitalization rates when LTOT was prescribed for 24 hours/day vs 15-16 hours/day in patients with oxygen-dependent COPD.
