Daily dose of preoperative opioid prescriptions affects outcomes after total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Jan 14, 2021
Terhune EB, Hannon CP, Burnett RA, et al. - This study was sought to distinguish the preoperative daily opioid dose correlated with elevated complications after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Researchers distinguished primary TKA patients in the Humana claims database (2007-2016) with an opioid prescription within 3-months prior to surgery. The study identified 20,019 Patients applying preoperative opioids. The findings suggested that after TKA, preoperative opioid use is correlated with a dose-dependent increase in postoperative complications. It was shown that just two 5mg hydrocodone tablets daily leads to increased emergency department visits and readmission. The findings revealed that the higher doses are correlated with an increased risk of PJI and revision surgery.
