D-dimer levels in VTE patients with distal and proximal clots
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Apr 26, 2018
Singer AJ, et al. - Considering the growing evidence indicating no benefit of routine anticoagulation among venous thromboembolism (VTE) patients with distal clots (distal calf deep vein thrombosis [DVT] and sub-segmental pulmonary embolism [PE]), the D-dimer levels in VTE patients with distal and proximal clots were compared. In a multinational, prospective observational study of low-to-intermediate risk adult patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with suspected VTE, researchers noted higher D-dimer levels among VTE patients with proximal clots than patients with distal clots. However, to discriminate between VTE patients with distal or proximal clots, D-dimer levels cannot be used alone.
