Cytomegalovirus-induced pathology in human temporal bones with congenital and acquired infection
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Aug 07, 2019
Tsuprun V, et al. - In this investigation, researchers determined histopathology of the inner ears and the middle ears in human temporal bones with congenital and acquired cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections. By light microscopy, temporal bones from two infants with congenital and two adults with acquired CMV infection were evaluated. According to results, two infants with congenital CMV infection exhibited striking pathological changes in the inner ear. The cochlea, vestibule, and middle ear were highly affected in two infants with congenital CMV infection. Temporal bones of adult donors with acquired viral infection showed similar histological findings without ear disease to donors of the same age. In the cochlea or vestibular labyrinth in acquired CMV infection, no evidence of cytomegalic cells and hair cell loss was discovered.
