Cytological sampling of fallopian tubes using a hysteroscopic catheter: A multi-center study
Gynecologic Oncology Mar 10, 2020
Powell CB, et al. - Researchers conducted a prospective, multicenter, single-arm pilot study investigating the feasibility of a novel hysteroscopic catheter to collect fallopian tube cytologic samples. Further, they correlated cytologic findings with histopathology. From 3 gynecologic oncology centers, enrollment of 50 women who were undergoing salpingo-oophorectomy for a pelvic mass suspicious for malignancy or for prevention of cancer for BRCA mutation carriers was done (October 2016–August 2017), of these 42 were eligible for evaluation. A novel FDA-cleared hysteroscopic catheter was used for collecting cytologic samples from the fallopian tube; these were evaluated by a pathologist blinded to surgical or pathologic findings. In 68% of cases, deployment of the device produced an evaluable cytologic sample with a high rate of concordance with histopathology. Findings suggest the possible utility of the novel hysteroscopic catheter for obtaining samples from the fallopian tube for cytology evaluation. Identification of benign vs malignant disease involving the fallopian tube could be done using the device.
