Cyclic stretch-induced oxidative stress by mitochondrial and NADPH oxidase in retinal pigment epithelial cells
BMC Ophthalmology Mar 24, 2019
Liang X, et al. - In this study, authors examine the data to assess the significance of cyclic stretch induced in retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) for the treatment of Vitreomacular adhesion (VMA)-related age-related macular degeneration (AMD). They detected higher levels of total reactive oxygen species (ROS) from 15 min to 24 h and higher mitochondrial superoxide in early time only. They found a significant incline in NOX2 at 24 h. A significant increase in NOX4 at 2 h and reached its peak at 24 h. They also recorded a significant increase in P-p38 at 12 h and 24 h. They reported a persistent high level of P-PKC after an incline at 15 min. Hence, they concluded prominent oxidative damage in VMA-related AMD due to cyclic stretch induced oxidative stress from both mitochodrial as well as NADPH oxidase in RPE cells.
