Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas are associated with basal proliferating actinic keratoses
British Journal of Dermatology Mar 24, 2018
Schmitz L, et al. - Researchers assessed the prevalence of downward directed basal layer expansion of actinic keratoses (AKs) adjacent to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (iSCC). Data demonstrated that most commonly basal proliferative AKs and atypical keratinocytes restricted to the lower third of the epidermis were seen adjacent to iSCC with less evidence for full thickness epidermal dysplasia. As per findings, dysplastic keratinocytes were seen to play a significant role in the epidermal basal layer and have potential association with iSCC.
