Current trends and projected burden of primary and revision total knee arthroplasty in korea between 2010 and 2030
Journal of Arthroplasty Jul 23, 2020
Kim TW, Kang SB, Chang CB, et al. - This research was undertaken to document the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) use in Korea from 2010 to 2018 and to assess if a rapid increase in TKA use has been maintained, and to calculate the projected TKA burden to 2030 based on the current use. Researchers examined procedural rate, growth rate, and revision burden of primary and revision TKAs in Korea between 2010 and 2018 applying the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Korean database. They further stratified TKA procedural numbers by age and gender. They calculated the projected TKA burden to 2030 including the procedural number and medical costs applying linear and quasi-Poisson regression models, respectively. It was shown that the procedural rates of primary and revision TKAs in Korea increased gradually by 35% and 68%, respectively between 2010 and 2018, and previously observed striking growth rate has markedly slowed. However, in comparison with 2018, the burdens of primary and revision TKAs are projected to increase by up to 91% and 155%, respectively, by 2030.
