Current prevalence of myopia and association of myopia with environmental factors among schoolchildren in Japan
JAMA Ophthalmology Aug 21, 2019
Yotsukura E, Torii H, Inokuchi M, et al. - In Japanese schoolchildren, researchers examined the current prevalence rate of myopia and the connection between environmental factors and myopia. Participants in the study were 1,416 schoolchildren. This cross-sectional study was conducted at two schools in Tokyo, Japan. Investigators found that the myopia prevalence was 76.5% among those aged 6 to 11 years and 94.9% among those aged 12 to 14 years and the high myopia prevalence was 4.0% among those aged 6 to 11 years and 11.3% among those aged 12 to 14 years. While using noncycloplegic autorefraction with a cutoff of −0.50 D may lead to overestimation of outcomes, these findings indicate that the present incidence rates of myopia among elementary and junior high school students in Asia are high, particularly if the outcomes of these two schools are generalizable to all schoolchildren in Japan and Asia.
