Current practices and safety of medication use during rapid sequence intubation

Journal of Critical Care May 25, 2018

Groth CM, et al. - In this multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study, researchers analyzed current practices and safety of medication use during rapid sequence intubation (RSI) in adult and pediatric intensive care unit and emergency department patients. Findings revealed significant differences in medication use by provider type and medications were often used inappropriately. Administration of etomidate to 58% with sepsis was reported, with no observed association with adrenal insufficiency. Ketamine was found to be associated with hypotension post-RSI and use was low with traumatic brain injury/stroke. The presence of an opportunity for optimization of medication use during RSI was realized.
