Curcumin gum formulation for prevention of oral cavity head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

The Laryngoscope Jun 21, 2019

Boven L, et al. - Researchers validated the effectiveness of curcumin [a polyphenol compound with anticarcinogenic properties] gum in this preliminary study by evaluating release and transmucosal absorption, along with measuring its effects on serum cytokine levels. In healthy volunteers, protocols consisting of initial chew (chewing gum for 30 minutes) and revised chew (alternating chewing and parking gum against buccal mucosa for 30 minutes) were tested. Via multiplex analysis, serum levels were assayed for 15 proinflammatory cytokines. The Asian population exhibited significantly lower curcumin release and serum levels when assessing differences between gender, race, and age. After chewing the gum, CXCL1 (GRO-α) and TNF-α were significantly decreased in serum. According to findings, enhanced mucosal contact seems critical in improving curcumin release and absorption. For the future study of curcumin chemoprevention, CXCL1 and TNF-α both represent potential biomarkers.
